Group Presentation
Chapter 16: Funk and Disco
When I heard of this group assignment at the beginning of the semester I thought I was going to have a hard time with it. The goal of the project was to share, with the class, the music you are interested in. I was not particularly interested in any of the genres available; and, also did not know a lot about any of the genres in the book. Despite all that however, I decided to go with Funk and Disco because it seemed like I could enjoy that chapter the most, out of all the other choices. I am really happy about my choice, because I feel I learned quite a lot about music I didn't know and even music I do love. Most specifically, I had never known that electronica had its roots in disco. After studying the styles of Funk and Disco, I would agree that modern house has a distinct structure that is very similar to Disco. That is: long openings, danceable beats, and the use of a DJ in place of a performer. I was given the chance to explain this to the class at the end of the presentation; and, I believe it was informative for not only me, but many others as well.

Listening Guide: Band of Mighty Souls
Reflection |
I had only just heard of Folk Hogan when I began attending History of Rock and Roll. I was part of a crew that ran their concert at the EVE show in the Salt Palace. After hearing their music, I searched everywhere to get their album. After I heard of this assignment I could think of no other song I would want to do than Band of Mighty Souls. Before the assignment however, I never considered breaking down the song into its sections and vocals, and trying to figure out what they meant by everything they did. In fact, I was a little worried that after I did all that I would lose interest in the song after finding out its true meaning. This was not true though, I found that Folk Hogan wrote a very interesting metaphorical story about themselves. This new knowledge kept me interested in their band, and I'm even wondering where they intend to go from here. The assignment also forced me to learn musical language a little bit. Before this class I hardly understood what a chorus actually was, and certainly didn't know what a bar was. This assignment has shown me many insights into the musical world, and I believe it is helping push me to further explore music.
